Programmes
Turning biodiversity goals into results on the ground.
National Driver
Section 24 of the Constitution and the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, including the 30×30 goal, carried by the green-economy and Just Transition agendas under the DFFE.
The Gap
Ambition and funding concentrate nationally, while degradation outpaces restoration locally and green-economy targets are slow to become local jobs.
The 100-Day Challenge Response
Teams closest to the land take one conservation goal from a plan on a shelf to a visible result in a catchment, reserve or community within 100 days.
Impact Areas
Ecosystem Restoration
- Indigenous trees planted and established at a verified survival rate by Day 100.
- Area cleared of alien invasive species in a defined zone.
Urban Greening
- Spaces greened and placed under a community care plan that holds to Day 100.
- Cleared sites converted into safe, usable community spaces such as food gardens or play areas.
Biodiversity Protection
- Reduction in human-wildlife conflict, veld fires, or poaching in a defined zone.
- Unprotected land brought into protection through co-management or stewardship agreements.
Biodiversity Economy and Livelihoods
- Community members earning a sustainable income from conservation-linked work.
- Green-economy enterprises generating first revenue within 100 days.
Freshwater and Catchments
- Pollution or dumping sources removed from a river, wetland, or spring, verified clear to Day 100.
- Riverbank or riparian zone planted and stabilised with indigenous species, established by Day 100.
Turning waste from a cost into a recovered resource and a livelihood.
National Driver
The National Waste Management Strategy and the Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, pointing towards a circular economy under the DFFE and the Waste Management Bureau.
The Gap
Over 60% of waste still goes to landfill, collection is unreliable in many areas, and reclaimer integration is unfinished.
The 100-Day Challenge Response
Municipal waste units, PROs, recyclers and reclaimer cooperatives turn waste into a recovered resource and a livelihood in 100 days.
Impact Areas
Diversion and Circular Economy
- Increase tonnes of waste diverted from landfill in a defined area.
- Increase materials recovery facility throughput or recyclate volume.
- Increase household participation in separation-at-source in a targeted area.
- Increase business participation in separation-at-source in a targeted area.
Organic Waste Diversion and Composting
- Increase tonnage of food and green waste diverted from landfill to composting systems.
- Increase commercial food-waste generators implementing separation-at-source for organic streams in a defined precinct.
- Increase tonnage of stable compost produced and distributed to local agriculture, food gardens, or greening initiatives by Day 100.
Collection and Services
- Reduce illegal dumping incidents or hotspots in a defined zone.
- Improve collection reliability or coverage in an underserved area.
Inclusion and Livelihoods
- Waste reclaimers integrated into a formal value chain for fair and improved income.
- Community-based recycling enterprises generating sustainable income.
From a tap on the wall to water that flows and is safe to drink.
National Driver
The National Water and Sanitation Master Plan 2030 and the National Water Action Plan, under the Department of Water and Sanitation.
The Gap
Most people have a tap, but supply is often unreliable or unsafe, and municipal debt to water boards has passed R27 billion. The failure is operational.
The 100-Day Challenge Response
Water-services teams, boards and communities fix the operational breakdown between infrastructure and a working tap within 100 days.
Impact Areas
Reliable Access
- Increase households receiving a reliable daily supply in a targeted area.
- Reduce the frequency or duration of supply interruptions in a defined zone.
Infrastructure and Losses
- Reduce non-revenue water through losses and leaks in a defined supply zone.
- Reduce the average response and repair time for reported faults.
- Increase revenue collection or reduce unaccounted supply in a defined area.
Water Quality and Sanitation
- Reduce water-quality failures against Blue Drop indicators at a defined treatment works.
- Reduce sewage or wastewater spill incidents in a defined system.
100 Days of Action. A Lifetime of Change.
