Week 2

Managing the First Team Meeting

The Start-Up Workshop is over, and the initial “honeymoon phase” excitement is beginning to fade. Week 2 is the start of transitioning the team from planning to a relentless weekly rhythm. This is where the work becomes real, and where your role as a Coach shifts from visionary facilitator to the guardian of accountability.

The One Thing to Get Right this Week

The First Team Meeting

Your mission this week is to facilitate the first “real-world” team meeting, with the goal of moving the team from “thinking” about the goal to “doing” the work.

Help the team leader prepare for the first team meeting and show them how to facilitate it.

To help you facilitate the Team meeting, you can revisit the Learning Deep Dive:  Sharpening your Facilitation Skills.

What you are Building This Week

This week is about setting the standard. If the first meeting is loose or lacks accountability, the rest of the 100 days will follow suit. You are building a culture of execution.  Support the team leader to build the culture with these practical tactics:

  • Action over Ideas: It is important to ensure every team member reports on what they did, not just what they thought about. If a member says, “I’m thinking about calling the station commander,” your move is to ask, “When will that call be completed so you can report the outcome next week?”

  • Visibility: Ensure the work plan is out, visible, and updated in real time.

  • Establish the “Battle Rhythm”: Confirm the day, time, and location (or link) for these meetings for the remainder of the sprint.

  • Respect the Timebox: Ensure the meeting is crisp, fast-paced, and ends on time.

Coach's Pro-Tip

“Don’t do the work for them; make the work visible so they can do it.”
