Renew the Commitment to our Goal

Renewing the Commitment to Our Goal

The primary purpose of this session is to re-energise the Team and ensure they are not just busy but remain laser-focused on their high-impact target.

As a Coach, you are facilitating a “psychological reset”. By mid-sprint, many people feel the weight of systemic friction; this session allows them to acknowledge those “bumps,” celebrate “bright spots,” and collectively decide if their “unreasonable” goal still serves as their North Star.

The Session Follows a Four-Step Flow

Reflection:

Surfacing the human experience of the first 50 days through shared dialogue.

Evidence-Gathering:

Identifying the tangible progress made to build a “wall of wins”.

The Confidence Diagnostic:

A raw, honest vote on the likelihood of success.

The Pivot Decision:

Formally choosing to stay the course, increase the challenge, or adjust the target based on reality.

1. Reflections

Start by welcoming the Team back and clearly outlining the objectives for this mid-point session. To break the ice and ensure every voice is heard, use the 1-2-4-All facilitation technique to explore the “human” side of the first 50 days.

    • What was a pleasant surprise about working on this Team?
    • What was a not-so-positive experience working with this Team?
    • What made you a little uncomfortable?

2. Evidence Gathering - Progress

To get into a positive spirit, ask each team member to share 2-3 things the Team did that helped make progress towards the Goal. These could be post-it notes or just sharing.

3. Confidence Diagnostics

Ask each team member to do a vote of confidence on the 100-Day Goal (It is best to ask them to pick a number and reveal this at once on post-it notes, or use a Mentimeter survey)

    • 1 = “no way in hell, no chance to reach our goal”
    • 5 = “100% sure we will achieve this.”

Discuss differences: Use the votes to ask probing questions and facilitate a conversation among Team members:

    • What makes you feel so confident?
    • Why are you so pessimistic?
    • What would it take to push your confidence up by 1 or 2 points?
    • What will need to happen in the next two weeks to move your vote above 4? (Have someone capture these ideas on the flip chart. They will come in handy to strengthen the plan.)

4. Pivot Decision - Changes to the Goal

Based on the confidence vote and the ensuing discussion, guide the Team to a decision on their 100-Day Goal.

The Pivot Options:

  • Stay the Course: The goal is on track and remains challenging but believable.
  • Nudge it Up: The Team is over-performing—increase the Goal to keep things “exciting and challenging”.
  • Shift it Down: The original Goal was based on flawed data or unexpected systemic barriers.

Coach's Tip

Gently nudge the Team away from the “Shift it Down” option – if at all possible.
